The design, materials and operation of our buildings affects our immune system, our respiratory systems, our wellbeing , and our planet.  One of the important lessons learned from the COVID 19 pandemic is the importance of maintaining our immune health. Those with weakened or compromised immune systems were considered more at risk, whilst people with healthy immune systems were considered more likely to recover, and less likely to experience severe symptoms if infected.
We spend over 90% of our time indoors. The built environment therefore plays a critical role not only in limiting infection by pathogens, but in increasing our chances and speed of recovery if we do get infected. The materials used inside our building, the heating and airconditioning systems utilized , and the operational and maintenance policies used can either act as massive triggers for existing conditions such as asthma, allergies and others, or contribute to the health and wellbeing of occupants and visitors alike , based on our design choices and selections.
The pandemic has also demonstrated that the link between economies and human health is strong and undeniable. Without a healthy , resilient built environment , that customers and occupants feel safe re-entering, businesses struggle to operate successfully , and economies flounder. Humanity should not have to make a choice between economies and human health. They are interrelated. A healthy building is part of a prosperous business, and a critical component of a nation’s economic resilience.

Environmental Regeneration: Beyond Sustainability

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no 13 outlined the importance of curbing global warming to under 2 degrees celsius . This must be tackled globally , or the ensuing climate change would result in potential droughts, floods and extreme weather amongst others. This will affect much more than our comfort conditions : our food security will be at risk , with agriculture in key areas being affected by climate change  , and locales in increased danger of flooding or wildfire will affect people’s homes and may result in displacement.

n 2019, the United Kingdom became the first major economy to pledge to becoming a net zero emitter by 2050.  Net zero refers to achieving a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. Achievement of net zero  is based on reducing existing emissions as well as actively removing greenhouse gases. Regeneration is the next environmental step forward, where active removal of greenhouse gases in conjunction with a surplus of renewable energy generation means that a business is not only “green” or “net zero” , but has moved beyond this stage to regeneration : the next step in the environmental roadmap where climate related damage and environmental damage is “undone” or reversed.
Close to 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions relate to the built environment , and minimizing the carbon footprint of residential, commercial and industrial buildings is critical to realizing national and global objectives.  Regeneros is committed to the transformation of the built environment for the betterment of humanity and the planet.
